The Strategic Thinker

In order to reach your goals, you have to have a clear vision and be very strategic in your planning. In fact, all of your goals should have backup plans. Think of achieving your goals like playing chess. You can’t simply make one place and then rest on your laurels without changing your approach. You have to continuously plan and change those plans according to changing situations. Being strategic involves having multiple plans and approaches that will give you the same results. A big part of being a strategic thinker is believing that no matter what happens that you will succeed. However, you must be willing to change your plans based on your results and intuition. A strategic thinker has a keen sense of intuition. They are very good at using their gut feeling to decide whether an action or plan will be a good fit for them and their goals. Not every decision can be based on facts and experience alone, strategic thinkers trust their gut when analyzing whether a risk is worth it. They will analyze every possible risk and then base their plan off of that analysis. A strategic planner will also look at the trends of their industry and the approached that other people use and the results that they achieved. It is essential for strategic thinkers to be innovative. They don’t do things the way everyone else does them simply because that’s the way it’s been done. They actively seek out new and effective ways to reach their goals. By doing so, they are sure to stand out from the crowd and be seen as an innovator. However, while they often strike out in new and exciting way, strategic thinkers know that it’s incredibly important to seek out the right people in their industry to get advice. There’s no need to learn old lessons that could be avoided by heeding the advice that came before them. Finally, strategic thinkers analyze their competition. They know that it’s important to know what the competition is offering so that they can find ways to distinguish themselves. What does it take to become a strategic thinker? There are 3 steps: Vision – It is exceedingly important to have a clear vision of your goal. Without such clarity, you will not be able to properly and effective plan the steps needed to get to where you would like to go. Plan – Once you have your vision, it’s time to sit down and plan the steps to achieve it. Most people find it easiest to start at the end and plan backwards. Think about where you’d like to be and of the steps that you will need to take and the resources that you will need to tap in order to reach your goal. Implementation – Here’s where the rubber meets the road. Far too many people fail to get to this point. They spend so much time planning that they never get to the implementation stage. Most people find it easier to break big projects into smaller tasks. That method makes achieving your goal manageable and you are less likely to become overwhelmed. You will find that you will repeat steps 2 and 3 over and over again. That’s fine. As circumstances change and you see the results of your first attempts, you must adjust your plan and implementation accordingly. Think strategically and grow prosperously!
